critters

10-24-11 Forgot this "critter"! We have slugs in Oakland but not banana slugs. Found one of these while I was doing my first plantings...I hope Sluggo works.

These are pictures of pocket gophers. The meadows in the front and back of the house are full of these creatures. They are the reason the previous owners of the house gave up on having a garden.

They eat roots and shoots, pulling plants down into their burrows. I have heard that you can actually see the plant descend under ground!

I have a plan. First - concentrate on only supposedly gopher proof plants. This weekend will see my first experiment. I want some attractive and scented plants near the front door. I would also like some herbaceous herbs to collect for the kitchen.

My initial plants include lavender, echia, euphorbia, lemon verbena, thyme, oregano, sage, rosemary, and daffodil bulbs. I will let you know if any remain when we return in a few weeks for the weekend. I will also spread seeds of runway arugula...the deer, slugs and snails don't like it; maybe the gophers will leave it alone. All the plants above are water wise and require little attention.
